One of my biggest pet peeves while golfing is following proper golf etiquette around the greens. Think about the percentage of our strokes taken on and around the greens in an average round of golf. Doesn’t every golfer want to have the best chance to have their score reflect their shot quality rather than hitting out of footprints in bunkers or having their putts go offline due to ball marks on the green?

For now, let’s focus on the green itself. I wish every starter on every golf course would check every golfer at the start of his or her round and make sure they have a divot repair tool. If they don’t, they should be sent back to the clubhouse to get one. A divot repair tool is one of the least expensive things you need in a sport that is NOT a cheap sport to equip yourself to play.

For a couple of dollars you can get a simple plastic divot repair tool and then you are set to do what every golfer should do when they walk onto every green. Simply repair your ball mark! That’s it! it takes less than 10 seconds and then you can go about the business of lining up your putt. If everyone followed this simple rule, we could worry about the line and speed of the putt, and not wonder if our ball is going to run over that old pitch mark we can see as we look across the green.

Take it one step further. Repair your ball mark. Then repair one more. Do this on every green. When you see a golfer who does not repair his ball mark, don’t let it pass. Remind him of his duty to his fellow golfers. Make him feel a little bad about what he did not do. I bet the next time he repairs that ball mark, and maybe even one more. And you will have made our game just a little bit more enjoyable.

Develop Your Core Strength to Improve Golf Swing Power

Attaining greater distance off the tee is a step by step process. The golfer first must address golf swing issues. If the golfer always hits a slice due to a flawed swing, increasing swing speed through fitness training will only result in a bigger slice!

Once we set the golfer on the right bath with the golf swing, then we can address some of the physical factors that may be holding back the swing speed. I have a friend who is a long drive champion and who now trains other potential long drive champions, and he mentions that “I am all about the core.” And, when you watch him work out, you know that he truly believes that. Incredibly, he is capable of 300 yard drives off his knees, and that is only possible with tremendous core strength.

So what exactly is the core? It is the area between the pectoral muscles and the upper thighs. In other words, it is mainly the muscles in the abdomen and rib cage, the obliques, the middle and lower back muscles, the glutes and the hip flexors. These muscle groups are important for stability and balance, and for providing rotational force in the golf swing.

When you check out many of the routines the PGA tour players are using these days, much of them focus on developing core strength through the use of balance balls, medicine balls and training bands. However, more traditional abdominal and other exercises will also do a good job at developing your core muscles.

So if you truly want to get that extra yardage off the tee, start focusing more on training your core muscles. When you combine that training with increased flexibility and leg strength, I guarantee you will see increased clubhead speed and yardage off the tee!

Developing a Proper Golf Swing

When most people start playing golf, they don’t start by going to a golf instructor or by researching what a proper golf swing is. Most people just go out and start hitting the ball. They develop a natural golf swing.

This usually works fine for a while. But most that continue become discontent with shooting in the 90’s (or worse). So they seek out golf lessons and they do golf drills and they get a proper golf grip all in an effort to have a correct golf swing.

These are all great things to do, but most people don’t have the time or money to go through all this. Here are a few tips that helped me to develop a proper golf swing:

Line Up With Your Target:

Your entire body should pointed at your target. Draw an imaginary line with your club head, feet, hips and shoulders. All should be lined up and pointing at your target.

Keep Your Head Down:

Most have a tendency to look up at soon as they hit the ball to see where it went. Don’t do it! Keep your head down until your follow-though forces your head up.

Keep Your Swing Smooth:

Don’t try to jerk the club. A proper swing is very fluid and smooth. Your swing should have a very consistent tempo and rhythm.

Grip Strongly Not Tightly:

Your grip should be firm (you don’t want the club flying out of your hands) but you don’t need a grip of steel.
